Investigative journalist Scottie Darden is [there] photographing the homeless for her Lost Souls series when she makes a discovery that could change her life forever. Under a makeshift tent in subzero temperatures in a downtown city park, she finds a woman’s dead body with her infant child. Without her cell phone to call for help, Scottie makes the split-second decision to take the baby home. Her initial instinct is to provide the baby with food and shelter until her family can be located. But as her fondness for the baby grows, she finds herself facing a life on the run or worse—prison time for abduction.
With current-day RVA as the backdrop, Ashley weaves a tale that will have you asking yourself what you would have done if faced with similar circumstances. Like her prior books, Saving Ben and Her Sister’s Shoes, Ashley has created well-defined and relatable characters and captured the setting perfectly. You really will want to curl up by the fire and inhale her story.
Merry Mary is the prequel to Ashley’s third novel, a romantic/political/suspense tale following Scottie during a presidential campaign. Ashley plans to release the as-yet-unnamed book in Summer 2016, just in time for next year’s election. Merry Mary will whet your appetite for what comes next.
