You may have seen artist Mary Kathryn Woodward’s home on Garden Week last spring or in the March issue of Richmond Home magazine, but come take a look at it all dressed up for Christmas. Mary Kathryn graciously invited us in to view her holiday decorating style, and we couldn’t have timed our photo shoot any better. Her welcoming home is filled with inspiration for decking our own homes, which are ready for some merry cheer.
don’t you love that wreath?
From the moment you walk up the front path of this Hampton Gardens home, you know that something special awaits on the other side of the lime green door.
This artist and decorator has created a breathtakingly beautiful home that is both happy and elegant. Her primary palette of green, blue and white provides a perfect backdrop for her exuberant oil paintings that cover the walls.
Mary Kathryn got her start in the fashion industry, working for Ralph Lauren right out of college.

That experience and living in New York for several years no doubt honed her ability to edit furnishings and accessories. Her restrained yet festive Christmas decorations feel both sophisticated and appropriate for this home that she and her husband have renovated mostly themselves over the last six years and now share with three tweens, two dogs, a few chickens and a beehive.

Mary Kathryn picked up a paint brush about 14 years ago after returning to Richmond from the Big Apple. She is a regular at Jane Joyner’s studio on the north side of Richmond, a favorite hangout of many local painters, and at the artist haven, Nimrod Hall in Bath County. Much of her painting, though, is done sitting at the table in this bright breakfast room.
In between painting, raising her children and making her home, Mary Kathryn has begun to take on decorating clients. With an impeccable eye for color, she consults on color schemes and helps her clients make their homes feel finished.
Named The Green Door for the signature green doors on her Richmond residences, her business has grown to include furniture and space planning for whole homes, as well as some garden consultation.

She will only take on a design job, though, if she knows she can balance it with her favorite job: being Mom.

For Mary Kathryn, the holidays are all about celebrating with those closest to you. She is blessed to have her parents and sister living very close by, and her home becomes a revolving green door of family and friends this time of year.
ready to entertain
She embraces our own mantra: the more, the merrier, and what a merry place she has created to celebrate Christmas.
In fact, we left the Woodward home filled with visions of tasteful Christmas decór dancing in our heads.
Thanks so much, Mary Kathryn, for sharing your Christmas spirit with The Gracious Posse. Your classic yet delightful style has us prepared to do some ruthless editing of our own boxes of decorations. We can’t wait to try following your gracious lead.
