When you enter sFl’s home, this unique feature immediately catches your eye and captures your attention.
The freestanding saltwater aquarium acts as a magnet pulling you in to stand mesmerized by the colorful fish and coral contained within its pristine glass walls.
RAF has nurtured a passion for aquariums for years, but not until the couple moved to RVA did he decide it was time to install a saltwater tank, which supports a wider variety of colorful fish and coral than a fresh water can. The location and beauty of the aquarium generates oodles of questions that we had to ask sFl.
1. How did you come up with the idea to make the aquarium freestanding?
When the couple renovated the house, they converted a front bedroom on the main floor into a study and planned to locate the aquarium on the wall where the bookshelves were to be installed. They sing the praises of their cabinet builder, Marc Cohen at Trademark Woodworking. He had the vision to make the aquarium a focal point with a 360° view.
2. What sort of maintenance is required to keep the tank and fish looking healthy?
Richmond Aquarium visits every three weeks to clean the tank and inspect the filtration system, which is housed in the cabinet beneath the tank.
3. What happens during a power outage?
The new whole-house generator covers that possibility, but a simple battery-powered aerator (commonly used in fish tanks) can provide the oxygen for the fish on a short term basis.
4. What types of fish, coral and plants populate the tank?
sFl is one of those organized gals who maintains a notebook tracking the inhabitants. It is the only way to answer the numerous requests she receives from visitors to identify them.
With the aquarium gurgling and fish flitting, the study provides a soothing environment for a frenzied soul. sFl and her husband chose the room’s artwork to complement the serene atmosphere. This three-dimensional work, Paper Assemblage created by RAF‘s brother Charles Lewis Feeser, has a different image depending on where you view it, akin to the movement within the aquarium.
sFl’s 360° aquarium is one of the most remarkable residential design features that we have ever encountered. Beautifully constructed and stocked, it graciously welcomes visitors to the family’s home. Thank you, sFl for sharing your inspiring fishy focal point with the Posse.
