Despite cold rain, sleet and snow (just like this St. Patrick’s Day in RVA), each winter the Philadelphia Flower Show draws tens of thousands of flower fans from all over the world to the city’s enormous convention center. These visitors come for all sorts of reasons, but all of them leave overwhelmingly impressed and inspired. aMl and I made the pilgrimage in 2008 when Jazz was the theme. This year’s ARTiculture sparked astounding creativity from all participants. As our special correspondents, aMl and mEl of Fleur de Vie, kept us up to date on their recent visit to the 2014 edition of this annual event, we vowed to make a posse pilgrimage to the 2015 show, February 28th – March 8th.
If you are trying to decide whether to follow the caravan next winter, these are our top 10 reasons why you should join the throngs.
10. Escape the Winter Cold and Get a Taste of Spring
More spring flowers than you can possibly count fill the Philadelphia Convention Center every year. Make a brief escape from the dreary weather of late winter and leave with hope for a beautiful spring.
9. Feel Good About Your Size
Been a little frustrated with how your New Year’s diet has been going? Just walk into the large exhibit halls, and you will feel Lilliputian. Annually the show welcomes visitors with enormous floral displays. In the spirit of this year’s theme, ARTiculture welcomed visitors with this giant Alexander Calder floral retrospective.
see the tiny people arm-in-arm in the background?
8. Live Your Childhood Gulliver Dreams
Even harder than creating on a grand scale is designing in miniature. These mini-art studio replicas demanded minute perfection and elicited oohs and ahhs.
7. Take a Master Class
Over the nine days of the show, a cast of world-renown floral and garden designers visit and teach lucky visitors. mEl even made it onto the stage this year as a volunteer assistant from the audience.
6. Plan Your Own Garden
A portion of the convention center is filled with stunning garden vignettes that are sure to give you some ideas for your own landscape.
5. Shop Til You Drop
The huge shopping area attracts the most amazing vendors from all over the country.
4. Dine in the Reading Terminal Market
Just across the street from the Convention Center is one of the most remarkable food markets that any Southerner is likely to see. From Italian delicacy to Amish pastries, you can find a different fabulous meal three times a day for at least a week among the stalls of the Reading Terminal Market.
3. Find a Hat for Royal Ascot
The sporting event of our fantasies is only just over three months away. Maybe some of these floral confections will give you some millenary ideas for your perfect outfit.
2. Leave with More Inspiration than You Can Imagine
1. Spend Quality Floral Time with Your Posse
Nothing beats a girlfriend getaway, and the floral surroundings make for the crowning touch. Why not join us?
Thanks so much to our Fleur de Vie ladies, aMl and mEl, for all of the pictures (except of the Reading Terminal Market). They are fabulous and leave us craving Spring!
p.s. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Keep thinking green. Maybe our collective warm thoughts will melt this latest round of snow.
