It is Memorial Day. Like many middle-aged adults, most of my contemporaries have not known friends or family killed in war, thus the tradition of Memorial Day has given way to Memorial Day’s new meaning: the unofficial start of the summer season. At The Gracious Posse, we’d like to acknowledge both.
The selection of music presented at my choir’s Memorial Concert last night had something for everyone: sacred music, national hymns and spirituals. As we rehearsed the national hymns, I was unexpectedly overcome with emotion at the words from Hymn 718 from the Episcopal Hymnal:
From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence, be thy strong arm our ever sure defense; thy true religion in our hearts increase, thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.
We give thanks for our loved ones past who served our nation: for my family members who have served in every American war up to and including the Vietnam War, I am so proud. For those in my generation who have served our country in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and especially those who paid the ultimate price in service to our country like the husband and father whom Alison described in You Can Help Carry the Load of our Military Families and Truly Honor Memorial Day, we are eternally grateful.
After today, like most schools and churches, The Gracious Posse will assume a summer schedule. Look for our posts celebrating lives of style and substance with grace and girlfriends three times a week. Like you, Alison and I have a list of summertime projects and travels slated for the next three months. No doubt many of them will appear on these digital pages, which we will continually strive to improve for you. As we say, YOU are our posse – our inspiration, so please feel free to share with us your thoughts,
yummy recipes, nifty finds and special experiences.
In closing, as you travel across our great nation and beyond, remember those whose sacrifice made it possible.
O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.May 27, 2013
