Having the right tool makes all the difference to a
stressed-out momgracious hostess.
Yes, it is a gender stereotype, but for most of the posse, the kitchen is our workshop. Just like the big boys’, our workshops function best with the right tools. If you don’t have one, you won’t even attempt certain
Choosing the right tool is often automatic, but when you make the wrong choice, the recognition often comes just a second too late. Over the years, I have collected drawers full of tools so I am always prepared for whatever I want to make. Some tools I use daily, while others emerge only once or twice a year for a seasonal dish.
Occasionally when I pull a kitchen tool out, I wonder how I could ever live without it. Recently, this has been a subject of conversation for Ellen and me. We began an informal poll of a few of the posse and asked them to quickly answer one simple question:
What is your favorite kitchen tool?
We loved the responses and agree that each of these tools does make life easier whether you are just getting dinner on the table for your family or preparing to entertain your posse or your husband’s boss. Take a look at these answers, then let us know what you would add to the list.
The favorite of Ellen and dNz, this is no doubt an often used tool in many a posse kitchen.
Not only my absolute favorite, but also recommended by aRm and rBo, it handles garlic, ginger and hard cheeses with equal aplomb. I use my Microplane so often that I really do need to purchase another.
From Atlanta posse gal lDd, there is a reason that this tool is a wedding present standard. Though often the butt of men’s jokes, when you need to dry a lot of lettuce or spinach leaves, nothing works better than a good old salad spinner.
sSn is one of the expert cooks of the RVA posse, always among the first to deliver meals to families in crisis. The magnetic approach keeps her measuring spoons all together in her utensils drawer, saving loads of time not having to hunt for the right size.
An obvious choice for kKk who also is a gifted cook working in a fabulous kitchen. The rule with knives, of course, is that they must be sharp. kMg swears by the Cutco brand.
The priciest tool on the list, it is aRm’s new favorite, and the Vitamix is appearing in more posse kitchens as the raw foods trend continues to grow.
We agree with jBr that it is not just for pizza. Handy for cutting up toddler’s food, a pizza wheel also works great on herbs and phyllo dough.
kMg always has something baking in her kitchen, and this handy tool makes the subsequent cleanup faster and easier. My scraper is not used nearly as often as hers, but when I need it, I am so glad to have it.
While I prefer to use the Microplane, some people such as aMl like the good old-fashioned garlic press. With either choice, you can easily add fresh garlic to any meal.
The not-so-surprising favorite of both jCb and mLs, this relatively recent tool sure makes creating soups easier than ever.
Born and raised near the ocean in South Carolina, aFh knows her way around seafood and loves this simple tool that turns a two-step process into one.
